Growing up in a small country town has many advantages and influences - music isn't one of them. Adam Thompson made the great 'rural escape' from Tallygaroopna, in northern Victoria, at the age of 19 and during his 2nd year of a performing arts degree wrote his first song…the impact was instantaneous. Within a month he left his course and proceeded head-on into the uncertainty of a full-time career as a singer/songwriter.

His first effort was a band originating from Geelong under the mantle of Show Of Hands. Although never a recording act, this band gave Thompson his grounding as a performer.

They would play support act to almost every style of music just for the exposure. These outer-comfort-zone experiences fell under the ‘what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' banner and prepared him for what was to come in early 1992.

It was then that Thompson co-founded a band that would go on to have substantial success in Australia. As front man for Australian rock group Chocolate Starfish, his unique image and persona were undeniably the group’s trademarks. Whilst rarely the critics’ darlings, Chocolate Starfish, with Thompson at the helm, constantly smeared the borders of 'acceptable' pop culture. The band sold over 250,000 recordings and was awarded 'Most Popular Album' of 1994 at the Australian Music Awards.

Recent travels to Stockholm have produced material that has become the basis for Thompson’s first solo offering. Entitled “GOOD NEWS TRAVELS FAST”, the single is an energy-driven production heralding the singer’s familiar vocal tones, and is unashamedly instant and exciting from the first listen. “Good News” also features re-mixes from several Stockholm teams, most notably Fathead, who has had success with mixes for artists such as Craig David. Word is that Thompson is recording and writing the best material of his career.

He credits this new-found enthusiasm to the collaboration of styles, between the ‘pop sensibilities’ of Swedish writers and his own ‘rock’ individuality. Writers such as Pelle Nylen, Anders Barren, Jany Schella and Goran Elmquist, who are used to penning hits for R&B artists, have created an exciting blend when combined with Thompsons’ theatrical stance on the pop/rock genre. Although his trademark image as ‘the shaved-headed front man from Chocolate Starfish’ has evolved, Thompson retains his charisma and presence each time he takes the stage. Low-key performances around Australia early this year have received generous and heartfelt response from enthusiastic audiences.

Thompson is one of those rare entertainers with the ability to move with a generation, while still appealing to a new and ever-increasing fan base. Like all artists who emerge from a known group, Adam Thompson will be judged on this new music by critic and music fan alike. Whether he is embraced en mass or treasured by a select audience, he will be satisfying the most basic wish of all creative entertainers - to be heard.
