Jacqui Cooper Freestyle Aerial Skier
Jacqui Cooper went to the 2006 Games looking to put a series of Olympic disappointment and disasters behind her. After enduring an interrupted lead up she surprised many by qualifying first in the semi final by nailing her trademark triple twisting somersault, breaking the world record only to miss her landings in the final. She had been the hot favourite for gold at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics after winning the World Cup title for three consecutive years, as well as the 1999 World Championship.
But a training accident in the week before her competition put her out of the Games with a shattered knee. |
Four years earlier, in 1998, she had also gone to Nagano as one of the favourites after a string of World Cup results that read bronze, silver, silver, gold – the latter the first of her career. But she crashed out of the event in the qualifying round, missing the final. The veteran skier was out of competition for two and a half years in the wake of the Salt Lake 2002 injury, making a successful return to competition at the 2004 Mt Buller World Aerials. In 2007 Jacqui became the most successful women’s aerial skier of all time after winning her fourth World Cup title in Apex, Canada.
During the season she bettered her own world record mark on 2 occasions and won her 19th world cup event. In 2007/08 Jacqui has set her sights on a new challenge that if successful will re-write women's aerial competition. Jacqui wants to be the first woman to land the fearsome quad twisting triple somersault jump, and with coach Todd Ossian has planned a 12-month program to learn the tough trick. Jacqui’s story is one of determination, courage and commitment. She is an inspiration to those who have a will to succeed in the face of adversity |
